From nearly 3,000 meter high mountain summits to rolling hills in southern Styrian wine country: Styria is rich in natural beauty. Pristine nature and forest as far as the eye can see make Styria the “Green Heart” of Austria.
Trustworthy and cordial, open and hospitable, enthusiastic about ideas and innovations: these characterize the people of Styria. In short: a good atmosphere – for people and for business!
Styria, the most popular travel destination for Austrians, is a land of great variety. Old and new, tradition and innovation have always lived in harmony here. Graz, the capital of the province, is a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its well-preserved medieval city center, where historical buildings rub shoulders with modern architecture that fits in seamlessly with the cityscape. As a UNESCO City of Design, Graz shows how good design has an impact on the city and people’s lives. Outside the capital, visitors can discover living traditions that preserve the old and welcome the modern. It’s no wonder that Styrians have developed a special attitude towards life, not to mention ideas that are known far beyond the province’s borders.
You can live well in Styria! Nature invites you to engage in sporting activities, relax and be active throughout the year, cultural life is rich in internationally renowned events from the Styrian music festival “styriarte” to the art festival “steirischer herbst”. Formula 1 races take place as regularly in Styria as the Alpine Ski World Cup. For all of these events, Styria puts her best face forward: pure water, clean
air and culinary delicacies characterized by sustainably produced regional products. Put it all together and you get a quality of life where body and soul feel equally at ease. And where people feel good, business can flourish!
The Styrian story of success starts with strong industries. Natural resources still form the basis for many businesses today. In fact, the most important raw materials in Styria are a renewable resource: creative and curious people who think and act like entrepreneurs.
Crafts are the fruits of knowledge resulting from centuries of sustainable production. Contemporary crafts represent an alliance between traditional techniques and modern know-how. The result: innovative products
with high functionality and distinctive design produced by masters of their trade. But Styrian crafts businesses are much more: they are strong and reliable partners that serve as the backbone for the region’s leading companies. By educating young people who will in turn become masters, they pass their knowledge on to the next generation. This training is in demand worldwide: young Styrian craftspeople can normally be found finishing in the top ranks of international competitions such as World Skills or EuroSkills – and have been doing so for many years!
5 universities, 2 universities of applied sciences, and 2 universities of teacher education make Styria a national hub of education and knowledge. Young people with an excellent education are some of Styria’s best assets.
With an R&D quota of 4.8 % (as of 7/15), Styria is at the top in Austria and one of the most innovative centers for business in Europe. An attractive site for technology with great innovative potential, Styria is the home of excellent research institutions and around half of all Austrian research centers that cooperate with industrial partners in the areas of mobility, ecotechnology and health technology.
Styria is an economically stable region with secure jobs and high educational standards. Numerous global market leaders that are located here prove this day after day. Around 200 industrial companies in highly specialized high tech branches such as the automobile industry, aviation, space, electronics, plant engineering or medical technology provide the basis for a strong dynamic and active cooperation between large and small companies. There are also a great number of technology-oriented and creative service providers. They all benefit from secure social and economic conditions that favor innovation, research and development.
The production of the future is becoming increasingly more complex and knowledgeintensive. With the slogan “Smart Production & Services”, Styria supports companies that invest in networked, digital and intelligent production. The best example of this is radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, for which Styria has become a global hotspot in recent years. More than 50 % of all chips worldwide were developed in Styria and Styria exports over 90 % of chips produced there.
Becoming stronger together: The strengths of the Styrian economy are pooled together in its numerous clusters and networks to create the greatest benefit for businesses. The cluster and network organizations (ACstyria Autocluster, Eco World Styria, Holzcluster Steiermark, Human.technology Styria, Creative Industries Styria) follow the guidelines for content laid out in the Economic Strategy Styria 2020, which has 5 core strategies: Regional Development and Management; Innovation and R & D; Entrepreneurship and Growth of Business Start-ups; Skills Development and Human Potential; Internationalization of the Region and Companies.
